Speaker Among urges drastic climate action amid South Sudan crisis

The Speaker of Parliament, Anita Among has emphasised the urgent need for collective action to address the challenges posed by global warming.

She called upon leaders to unite in the fight against climate change and highlighted the crucial role of tree planting in mitigating its effects.

"In light of our South Sudanese neighbours' decision to close schools, we must recognize this as a wake-up call for leaders to join hands and tackle global warming," she asserted.

In response, she announced that Parliament has taken the initiative to lead a tree-planting campaign, inviting citizens to actively participate in this vital endeavor.

In light of an ongoing heatwave sweeping across the country, the government of South Sudan has implemented a precautionary measure to close all schools starting Monday, March 18, 2024.

Yolanda Awel Deng, the Minister of Health, emphasized the severe health consequences of this extreme heat, with temperatures soaring between 41°C and 45°C.

Deng cautioned about the acute impact of heatwaves on large populations, which could result in public health emergencies and a rise in mortality rates.

The government stressed the importance of proactive measures to mitigate the adverse effects of the heatwave, urging parents to keep their children indoors and avoid outdoor activities.

Tragically, the government has reported deaths attributed to the scorching temperatures, underscoring the urgent nature of the situation.
