Katanga Murder Trial: Forensic Evidence Under Fire, Trial Adjourned
Additional concerns were raised about the absence of swabs from critical parts of the firearm, such as the trigger and barrel, which Mubiru confirmed were not collected
In the ongoing Katanga murder trial, the defense has mounted a strong challenge against the forensic evidence presented by the prosecution. The trial, presided over by Justice Isaac Muwata, has seen the Director of Forensic Services in the Uganda Police, ACP Andrew Mubiru Kizimula, face intense cross-examination for the fourth time.
During the hearing, which Molly Katanga attended via Zoom from Luzira Prison, the defense, led by lawyer Mc Dusman Kabega, questioned the accuracy of Mubiru’s forensic report, focusing particularly on the pistol allegedly used in the crime. Mubiru admitted that he had not physically examined the weapon, which led the defense to contest the reliability of his findings. Additional concerns were raised about the absence of swabs from critical parts of the firearm, such as the trigger and barrel, which Mubiru confirmed were not collected.

The defense argued that these omissions significantly undermined the credibility of the forensic analysis. Further doubt was cast when Mubiru acknowledged that no Gunshot Residue (GSR) analysis had been conducted, a crucial gap in the investigation, according to the defense. Despite these challenges, Mubiru stood by his conclusions, insisting that the materials he had examined were sufficient for his report.
The defense also pointed out discrepancies between the pathologist’s report and Mubiru’s findings, but Mubiru remained firm in his position.
The trial has been adjourned to October 1st, when more witnesses are expected to take the stand. The accused in this high-profile case include Molly Katanga, her daughters Patricia Kakwanzi and Martha Nkwanzi, along with their domestic worker, George Amanyire, and Doctor Otai Charles. The latter two face charges of destroying crucial evidence and being accessories to the crime.
