Prime Minister Robinah Nabbanja, has commended Huawei Technologies for its significant contributions to Uganda’s digital transformation and economic development during a meeting with a Huawei Delegation at her office in Kampala on Thursday.

The delegation was led by Dong Eric, Huawei’s Eastern Africa Multi-Country Regional CEO, and Edward Zhang, the Managing Director of Huawei Uganda.

Nabbanja praised the company’s efforts in building Uganda’s digital economy, including investments in infrastructure, training, and job creation.

“Huawei has greatly contributed to Uganda’s GDP and has played a central role in digital skills development, having trained over 20,000 Ugandans under different programmes over the years. I commend them for their work on key national projects such as the construction of the National Backbone Infrastructure, which is vital for Uganda’s continued growth in the digital sector,” Nabbanja said.

“I welcome Huawei’s commitment to work closely with all partners in Uganda to promote digital economic development. I encourage them to bring as many investors as possible to help develop our country.”

In his remarks, Dong highlighted Huawei’s long-term commitment to Uganda’s growth, noting the company’s growing role in the local economy.

“Huawei has greatly contributed to Uganda’s GDP, with about USD 11 million paid in tax annually. We are also proud that the proportion of local employees in our Ugandan operations has grown from just 10 percent to 80 percent today,” he said.

He reaffirmed Huawei’s pledge to continue working with the Government of Uganda to accelerate innovation and digital inclusion.

Huawei, a Chinese information and telecommunication technology giant operating in over 170 countries, has been a key partner in Uganda’s ICT sector, contributing to infrastructure development, skills training, and capacity building.

The bilateral relations between Uganda and China remain cordial, with Huawei’s investments seen as a cornerstone of that cooperation.
