Ugandan Students Win Big at Huawei Global ICT Awards in China

Ugandan students from Cavendish and Gulu University have made the country proud after winning the second prize at the Huawei Global ICT Competition Awards held in Shenzhen, China.

The annual competition, which drew participation from over 40 countries, celebrates outstanding student innovations in information and communications technology ICT.

The Ugandan team impressed judges with their technical prowess and innovative ideas, emerging among the top three teams in a fiercely contested global challenge.

Speaking at the awards ceremony, Dr. Kedrace Turyagyenda, Permanent Secretary at the Ministry of Education and Sports, commended the students for their achievement, noting the government’s commitment to advancing ICT education.

“We are extremely proud of our students, this success is a testament to Uganda’s growing talent in ICT and reaffirms our dedication to supporting young innovators who are shaping our digital future,” Dr. Turyagyenda noted.

The awards ceremony was also attended by Ambassador Judyth Nsababera, Uganda’s Consul General in Guangzhou, who presented medals to the winning team.

“As you innovate, I encourage you to create solutions to the problems that we face Uganda,” Ambassador Nsababera told the students, urging them to use their skills to address national challenges through technology.

Huawei, the global ICT solutions provider behind the competition, has been instrumental in supporting digital skills training across Africa. Its collaboration with Ugandan institutions continues to open doors for young people to access global platforms and showcase their talents.

The success of the Ugandan team not only highlights the students’ abilities but also strengthens Uganda’s position on the international ICT stage, demonstrating the country’s growing potential in the digital economy.
