Umeme urges users to upgrade Yaka metres ahead of deadline
Caption not available

Umeme, Uganda’s primary electricity distributor is reminding Yaka prepaid meter users to check and upgrade their meters by November 24 to avoid any disruptions in service.

This upgrade is essential for a smooth, uninterrupted power supply and is part of Umeme's commitment to maintaining quality service as it approaches the end of its contract with the Ugandan government in March 2025.

The government has announced that it will not renew Umeme’s contract, which has been in place since 2005.

This departure marks a significant transition in Uganda’s energy sector as the government explores new management options for electricity distribution.

Umeme’s exit will end nearly two decades of private sector involvement in Uganda’s power distribution, with the government reportedly considering a state-run model or alternative providers to ensure continued and reliable service.

In light of its impending departure, Umeme has accelerated efforts to facilitate a smooth handover by ensuring that all systems, including Yaka! meters, are upgraded and fully functional.

To help customers verify if their meters have been upgraded, Umeme provided specific codes for different meter types.

Umeme is urging all customers to complete the upgrade as soon as possible to avoid potential service issues as its contract expiration approaches.

The company continues to post reminders and instructions on its X (formerly Twitter) account to guide customers through the upgrade process and ensure they remain connected.

As Uganda’s electricity distribution landscape is set to change, Umeme is focused on fulfilling its service mandate and facilitating a seamless transition that prioritizes customer satisfaction and uninterrupted power access.
