Fresh Dairy donates milk powder worth billions towards emergency support to vulnerable communities

Fresh Dairy has donated milk powder worth  shs2.2 billion to Uganda Red Cross Society (URCS) towards emergency support focusing on enhancing the health and nutrition of Kiteezi garbage slide survivors, refugees and host communities in Kiryandongo refugee settlement.

A few weeks ago,  Kiteezi residents were struck when the dumpsite slid leaving over 1000 families affected and almost 40 people killed and another injured.

Others are still missing.

Additionally, in 2024, Uganda has recorded numerous new refugee arrivals majorly from Sudan that are being settled in Kiryandongo refugee settlement.

In total, the settlement hosts 119,103 refugees and host community individuals.

On Saturday, the producers  of homogenized and pasteurized dairy products donated milk powder to these vulnerable communities.

"“As a family brand, we believe in standing with vulnerable communities in need and have donated Fresh Dairy milk powder worth shs2.2 billionto Uganda Red Cross Society towards enhancing the health and nutrition of both the Kiteezi garbage slide survivors and the refugees and families in Kiryandongo settlement,"said Vincent Omoth, the  Marketing Manager, Fresh Dairy .

While at Fresh diary offices in Industrial area, Dr. Naphtal Baguma, the Director Supply Chain and Estates Management at Uganda Red Cross Society hailed the company for the donation.

“Uganda Red Cross Society plays an auxiliary role to government of Uganda and has a mandate of saving lives especially during emergencies. Currently, we are handling the Kiteezi garbage slide situation and have set up temporary mobile shelters for the over 1000 displaced families.We are providing Psychosocial support, relief aid among others services," Dr.Baguma said.

"Additionally, since early this year, URCS has set up mobile shelters and a mobile clinic in response to the refugee influx from Sudan totaling up to 119,103 individuals in Kiryandongo refugee settlement. We thank Fresh Diary for the milk powder donation which will be distributed to both the Kiteezi and Kiryandongo refugee settlement families, focusing more on mothers and children.”

Baguma called upon more partners to support humanitarian emergencies because it takes multi-sectoral approach to save lives.
