Sugarcane out growers up in arms over new Kakira Sugar harvest policy

Business

Sugarcane out growers attached to Kakira Sugar works Ltd are bitter over a new harvest policy that was adopted by the firm.

Under the new harvest policy, Kakira Sugar has hired a contractor who will be in charge of transporting sugarcane from the out growers to the factory.

This has not gone down well with already disgruntled farmers who think it will cause a lot of bureaucracy and deny them access licences to supply cane.

The incensed farmers attacked the factory bosses and it took the intervention of Madhvani security to calm down the situation.

Farmers say they have the capacity to transport their own cane as it has been over the years hence they don't need a contractor to help them but Kakira Sugar insists this is aimed at improving the quality of sugarcane supplied to them.

Many farmers in Busoga subregion continue to suffer due to the sugarcane politics which has prompted many to abandon the crop.
