The Kigezi High School community and friends from the Diocese of Kigezi gathered on Thursday evening to celebrate Prof. Augustus Nuwagaba's recent appointment as Deputy Governor of the Bank of Uganda.
Prof. Nuwagaba, an alumnus of Kigezi High School and a former head prefect, was praised as one of the school's most distinguished ambassadors.
He attended Kigezi High School Primary from 1972 to 1979 and later joined Kigezi High School (Secondary) from 1979 to 1984, serving as head prefect in the 1983/84 academic year.
The celebrations took place at the residence of the Kigezi Diocesan Bishop, Gaddie Akanjuna, on Rugarama Hill in Northern Division, Kabale Municipality.
The event was attended by school staff, administrators, student leaders, A-level Economics students, academicians, clergy, and selected friends of the Diocese.
The Kigezi High School headteacher Abraham Akampurira commended Prof. Nuwagaba and his peers for setting high academic and leadership standards.
I acknowledge that the school's performance had fluctuated over the years but credited recent improvements to the concerted efforts of stakeholders."Akampurira states.
Reverend Reuben Byomuhangi, Chairperson of the Board of Governors, encouraged Prof. Nuwagaba to seek divine guidance as he undertakes his responsibilities in economic planning.
"I want to call on you that as you set off on your new role,always seek God's guidance."Byomuhangi guides.
Bishop Akanjuna dedicated Exodus 33:15 to Prof. Nuwagaba, where Moses tells God that if He will not accompany the Israelites on their journey, they would rather not proceed.
The Bishop emphasized the importance of God's presence in every endeavor.
Prof. Nuwagaba acknowledged the Kigezi sub-region for producing renowned professors such as Joy Kwesiga, Joy Kyamunyogonya, Mondo Kagonyera, and Ezra Suruma, whom he admired throughout his academic journey. Citing Job 28:28, he emphasized that the fear of the Lord is the source of wisdom.

Prof. Augustus Nuwagaba, born in 1964 in Kabale Municipality, is a distinguished economist and consultant in economic transformation.
He attended Kigezi High School before earning a Bachelor’s degree from Makerere University in 1989. He later obtained a Master of Science from the London School of Economics, a PhD in Economics from Makerere University, and an MBA from the Eastern and Southern African Management Institute.
With expertise in fiscal policy, financial management, and economic development, he has consulted for organizations such as the World Bank, NEPAD, and the East African Community.
His notable projects include the FINSCOPE Financial Penetration Project and Uganda’s National Development Plan review. A recipient of the International Award for Significant Contribution to World Society, he has also been listed in the World Who’s Who.
As Deputy Governor of the Bank of Uganda, Prof. Nuwagaba aims to drive economic stability and inclusive growth, leveraging his extensive experience in monetary policy and banking sector oversight.
