“The KGC 2024 should tackle issues of national and global significance, including gainful employment, food security, governance, and democracy,” he asserted, stressing that Africa’s concerns are intertwined with broader global challenges.

Against a backdrop of political turmoil, with conflicts raging across various continents, Nawangwe highlighted the urgency of finding solutions to these crises.

From the Israeli-Palestinian conflict to the war in Sudan and ongoing insecurity in Somalia, he warned, “We live in a world where no one should take Africa for granted because it is an ever-changing continent.”

He underscored that Africa's evolving political landscape presents both opportunities and challenges, particularly in light of global conflicts.

Discussions at the conference also addressed the pressing issue of sexual violence in armed conflicts, with several speakers highlighting the critical need for justice and healing for victims.

Dr Guillemine Taupiac emphasised, “There is no proper fight against impunity in cases of sexual and gender-based violence (SGBV) without acknowledging the victims. They must be seen and heard in the criminal proceedings.”

In her address, Sarah Kihika Kasande reflected on the historical injustices Africa has faced, particularly regarding war crimes and sexual violence.

“Participants are calling for a permanent end to the historical injustices that Africa has suffered,” she stated, echoing the sentiments of many attendees.

With calls for governance reforms, sustainable food security measures, and democratic principles, the Kampala Geopolitics Conference 2024 serves as a vital platform for rethinking Africa’s role in the world.

As Prof Nawangwe remarked, “No one should take Africa for granted.” The continent's rapid transformations demand attention and respect on the global stage, making the conference a powerful reminder of the critical issues at hand.
