World Food Day: Uganda Calls for Unified Action to Tackle Food Loss, Malnutrition
Addressing the media at the Uganda Media Centre in Kampala on Wednesday, the Minister for Agriculture, Animal Industry and Fisheries, Frank Tumwebaze, urged governments, organisations, and the private sector to work hand in hand to secure the nation’s food future.

The government has called for collective action to combat food waste, improve nutrition, and promote climate-smart agriculture ahead of the 45th World Food Day.

Addressing the media at the Uganda Media Centre in Kampala on Wednesday, the Minister for Agriculture, Animal Industry and Fisheries, Frank Tumwebaze, urged governments, organisations, and the private sector to work hand in hand to secure the nation’s food future.

“This year's theme, 'Hand in Hand for Better Foods and a Better Future,' emphasizes that transforming our agrifood systems requires collaboration at every level,” he said.

The national celebrations are scheduled for October 16, 2025, at the Rwebitaba Zonal Agricultural Research and Development Institute, Kyembogo Station, 10km from Fort Portal city.

The institute is one of 16 research centers operated nationwide by the National Agricultural Research Organisation (Naro).

Minister Tumwebaze highlighted that over 70% of Ugandans depend on agriculture, yet the sector faces persistent challenges, including low productivity, post-harvest losses, limited market access, and climate variability.

“World Food Day should not be just about producing food, but also managing it responsibly for equitable distribution, better nutrition, and sustainability,” he said.

Uganda continues to battle malnutrition, with about 25% of children under five stunted. “Better foods mean safe, nutritious, and affordable diets, vital for healthy growth, strong immunity, and productivity,” the Minister stressed.

He also called for adoption of climate-smart agricultural practices, drought-tolerant crops, water harvesting, and improved land management to protect the environment while ensuring food security.

During the celebrations, new crop varieties — including Irish potatoes, millet, and bananas — will be unveiled for uptake and commercialization by communities and the private sector.

“Let us make this 45th World Food Day not just a celebration, but a springboard for sustained action that transforms lives and secures our food future,” Minister Tumwebaze concluded.

In attendance at the briefing were Naro Director General Dr. Yona Baguma, Naro Deputy Director General in charge of Agricultural Technology Promotion Dr Sadik Kassim, and Mr. Martin Ameu from the Food and Agricultural Organisation.
