Busoga Farmers Prepare for Flagship Village Agric Model Season

The Busoga Consortium for Development (BCD) has launched an initiative to revolutionize agricultural productivity in Namayingo District, mobilizing 100 household farmers in Namayombe Village for a flagship soya bean cultivation programme under the Village Agricultural Model (VAM).
Mr. Ronald Sanya, the chairperson of Namayingo District, emphasized the initiative's potential to transform rural livelihoods.
"We are committed to improving the lives of our people, and this initiative is a significant step towards that goal," Sanya said.
"I urge our farmers to embrace this opportunity, work hard, and support the Vice President's office in its efforts to uplift rural farmers."
The VAM initiative, launched in August 2024 by Vice President Jessica Alupo, seeks to enhance agricultural productivity, boost household incomes, and encourage sustainable development throughout the region.
Namayombe Village has been selected as a model village for this programme, alongside Busana Village in Kamuli District and Mashiga Village in Mayuge District.
Mula Anthony, director-general of BCD, highlighted the economic potential of soya bean cultivation, pointing to its versatile uses such as soya milk, porridge, animal feeds, and other processed products.
"We are working to attract value addition for soya beans in Namayombe Village, ensuring that farmers gain good incomes and achieve household transformation," he explained.
Farmers are expected to prepare one acre of land each for soya bean cultivation by March 19th, 2025, aligning with the current planting season.
The initiative also encourages farmers to engage in poultry rearing and cultivate other crops like cassava and coffee for both income generation and food security.
"This intervention, led by the Busoga Consortium, is aligned with our broader goal to enhance agricultural productivity, boost household incomes, and foster sustainable development across the region," said Mula Anthony.
"We are determined to make this initiative a success and transform the lives of our people."
