For months, farmers struggled with insufficient pasture for their livestock, leading to a sharp decline in milk production and rising milk prices.

Farmers in Ibanda are breathing a sigh of relief following a heavy downpour on Wednesday, marking the end of a lengthy dry spell that had severely impacted livestock and crop production.

The downpour, lasting about an hour, was the first significant rainfall since mid-December 2024.

For months, farmers struggled with insufficient pasture for their livestock, leading to a sharp decline in milk production and rising milk prices.

"We have really suffered. Our animals lacked pasture, and milk production dropped significantly. Some people could not even afford to buy milk because the prices went too high," said a local cattle keeper.

Crop farmers had also been anxiously awaiting the return of the rains to begin planting. "We have been praying for this rain. Now we can start preparing our gardens with the hope that the rains will be consistent," said another farmer.

However, experts have urged caution before farmers rush to plant. Ibanda District Agricultural Officer Peter Bwengye advised that while the rain is a promising sign, it is too early to determine whether the dry spell is truly over.

"This rainfall is a positive sign, but it may not yet be reliable. Farmers should observe the pattern and ensure the rains are consistent before they begin planting their crops," Bwengye warned.

Bwengye explained that a reliable rainy season is confirmed only when rainfall is received for three consecutive days. "According to weather predictions, more consistent rains are expected by mid-March," he added.

Despite the cautionary advice, the farming community remains hopeful. The return of the rains provides an opportunity to restore farms, boost milk production, and sustain livelihoods. As farmers prepare for the upcoming season, they remain optimistic that the rains will stay.
