The Chairperson of the African Union Commission, H.E. Mahmoud Ali Youssouf, has expressed grave concern over the worsening conflict in Sudan, particularly in El Fasher, North Darfur.
In a statement issued from Addis Ababa, Youssouf cited credible reports of intensified attacks on civilians in Zamzam and Abu Shouk camps, resulting in numerous deaths, including children and humanitarian workers.
Describing the assaults as “an unacceptable and grave violation of international humanitarian and human rights law,” the AU Chairperson extended his condolences to the families of the victims and the people of Sudan.
The African Union (AU) reiterated its call for an immediate and unconditional cessation of hostilities, referencing its earlier Peace and Security Council Communiqués [PSC/PR/COMM. 1179 (2023)] and [PSC/PR/COMM. 1191 (2024)].
The continental body urged those besieging El Fasher to lift the blockade and allow unhindered humanitarian access, emphasising that de-escalation is urgently needed to protect civilians and restore peace.
Calling for maximum restraint from all involved parties, the AU stressed that the well-being of the Sudanese people must be the foremost priority.
The Union appealed for an environment conducive to lasting peace and development.
In a renewed plea, the AU urged Sudanese actors to demonstrate political will by agreeing to a durable ceasefire and participating in a comprehensive, inclusive, and Sudanese-led political process.
The African Union affirmed its continued commitment to collaborating with Sudanese stakeholders, regional partners, and the international community to safeguard civilians and support efforts to restore peace, stability, and democratic governance in Sudan.
