The Namibian government will require US citizens to obtain a visa before entry starting April 1, 2025, citing the need to streamline immigration procedures and enhance border security.

The US Embassy in Windoek on March 25 asked American tourists to apply in advance through Namibia’s online visa-on-arrival portal at eservices.

"Applicants using this system must carry a hard copy of their approval notice when traveling," the embassy said.

Alternatively, visitors arriving at Windhoek or Walvis Bay airports, as well as major border crossings such as Katima Mulilo and Ngoma, will have the option to purchase a tourist visa upon arrival.

However, as Namibia’s visa-on-arrival system is new, implementation details may change.

Namibia is renowned for its diverse landscapes and rich wildlife, making it a prime destination for ecotourism.

The country offers a variety of attractions, including Etosha National Park, one of Africa's premier wildlife reserves, home to a vast array of animals and centered around the expansive Etosha Pan.

The Namib Desert, the world's oldest desert, features towering dunes and unique flora such as the ancient Welwitschia plant.

The Skeleton Coast is a remote and hauntingly beautiful stretch of coastline known for its shipwrecks and seal colonies.

Damaraland, a region of rugged beauty, offers opportunities to see desert-adapted elephants and ancient rock engravings.

Tourism plays a significant role in Namibia's economy, contributing approximately N$7.2 billion ($390 million) to the gross domestic product.

As of December 2024, Namibia's tourism sector demonstrated significant growth, surpassing pre-pandemic levels.

The country recorded an overall national room occupancy rate of 54.48% for the year, nearly 3% higher than in 2023 and 1% higher than in 2019, the year before the global pandemic impacted the tourism industry.

While specific figures for international tourist arrivals and tourism revenue in 2024 are pending, the upward trend observed in 2023 suggests continued recovery and expansion.

In 2023, Namibia welcomed approximately 863,872 international visitors, an 87.4% increase compared to 2022.

Additionally, the tourism sector contributed 6.9% to Namibia's GDP in 2023, generating USD 348 million in international tourism receipts.

Visa requirements for US citizens vary across African countries. Some nations allow visa-free entry or offer visas on arrival, while others require obtaining a visa prior to travel.

Morocco, Tunisia, and Senegal permit US tourists to enter without a visa for short stays.

Countries like Tanzania and Zambia offer visas upon arrival for US citizens, though it is advisable to check the latest requirements before traveling.

Ghana and Nigeria require US travellers to obtain a visa prior to arrival.

Given that visa policies can change, it is essential for travelers to verify the current entry requirements of their intended destination well in advance of their trip.
