The Uganda Prisons Service has commenced its annual Christmas meat slaughtering exercise at Luzira Prisons Complex, aiming to provide a festive meal for over 78,000 inmates and 14,000 staff across the country.
The initiative, which will extend to all 266 prison stations nationwide, involves the slaughter of 687 cattle, ensuring that each facility receives its share in time for the holiday celebrations.
Speaking about the exercise, Senior Commissioner of Prisons and Service Spokesperson Frank Baine highlighted the importance of creating a festive atmosphere within the prison community.
“We want to make sure that our inmates and staff have a Christmas to remember, just like everyone else,” he said, emphasizing the Service’s commitment to humane treatment.
Dr. Generous Betunga, Superintendent of Prisons and Veterinary Surgeon, assured the public that stringent measures are in place to ensure the meat is safe for consumption.
“We conduct thorough inspections of the organs and carcasses to guarantee the quality and safety of the meat,” Betunga noted.
The exercise underscores the Uganda Prisons Service’s dedication to the welfare of inmates and staff, fostering inclusivity and dignity during the festive season.
