The Uganda Institute of Information and Communications Technology (UICT) has marked 25 years of advancing digital transformation, calling on policymakers to develop a digital skilling model that accommodates all Ugandans, including marginalized communities.
Speaking at the celebrations, UICT Deputy Principal Dr. Irene Nakiyimba emphasized the need to integrate ICT into education to equip diverse populations with relevant digital skills.
“Our commitment at UICT is to nurture talent, foster innovation, and create opportunities for all. Today, we gather not just to reflect on the past but to shape the future of UICT and the ICT industry as a whole, working towards a thriving digital economy,” Nakiyimba said.
She noted that UICT is set to train refugees and other underserved communities as part of efforts to bridge the digital divide. The initiative, spearheaded by the National Information Technology Authority - Uganda (NITA-U), will see UICT serve as an implementer under Component Three of the project, focusing on capacity building and skills development for marginalized groups.
“This includes women, youth, persons with disabilities, and refugees. By addressing critical skills gaps, we aim to propel Uganda’s digital transformation agenda,” she added.
Dean Munene, Chairperson of the UICT Governing Council, highlighted the vital role of alumni in driving innovation and contributing to the digital economy.
“Today, we celebrate 25 years of UICT, and we intend to harness the power of our alumni community. Many of our graduates have made significant contributions in their respective fields, bringing honor to UICT through leadership and innovation,” Munene noted.
He reaffirmed UICT’s commitment to producing globally competitive ICT professionals capable of meeting the demands of the evolving digital landscape.
“Your achievements are a testament to perseverance, hard work, and the strong educational foundation you received at UICT. Your success, wherever you are, reflects the excellence that this institution instills in its students,” he added.
As UICT embarks on its next chapter, stakeholders were urged to collaborate, share ideas, and strengthen the institution’s legacy.
Nakiyimba reiterated that achieving a digitally skilled Uganda requires collective effort, calling on policymakers to formulate a comprehensive digital skilling model that leaves no one behind.
The 25-year milestone not only celebrated UICT’s achievements but also reaffirmed its commitment to driving digital innovation and inclusivity in Uganda.
