Hundreds of jubilant residents in Soroti gathered at various locations to celebrate the New Year in style, blending faith and festivity to usher in 2025. From prayer centers to vibrant entertainment spots, the town came alive with joy and excitement.
At Pentecostal and Anglican churches across Soroti, worshipers thronged in large numbers to thank God for 2024 and pray for blessings in the New Year.
With hands raised in praise and voices singing harmoniously, the faithful expressed gratitude for the gift of life and protection throughout the year.
A gift of love for Teso
The Rt. Rev. Kosea Odongo, the Anglican Bishop of Soroti Diocese, delivered a moving New Year sermon at St. Peter's Cathedral.
Addressing Christians, Odongo described 2025 as a "gift of love for the people of Teso" and urged them to use it wisely. He called on the congregation to embrace unity, love, and hard work as pillars for progress in the new year.
"Let us remember that this new year is an opportunity to build, grow, and foster peace among ourselves. It is a chance to correct the mistakes of the past and move forward with God’s guidance," the Bishop said.
While many sought spiritual renewal, others turned to celebration to mark the crossover. Clubs and drinking joints in the town were packed with revelers, with music blaring and dance floors bustling with energy.
In particular, the Independence Grounds hosted a grand fireworks display organized by local leaders and businesspersons.
The dazzling lights illuminated the night sky, drawing cheers from the crowd that had gathered to witness the spectacle.
"I feel so happy tonight! After all the challenges we faced in 2024, this is a moment to celebrate life and hope for better days ahead," said Martha Akol, a resident who attended the fireworks display.
Soroti authorities ensured that the celebrations were safe and orderly.
The District Police Commander, in a statement earlier in the day, assured the public that both uniformed and plainclothes officers had been deployed to maintain law and order.
This proactive approach paid off, as the night’s festivities proceeded without major incidents.
As the celebrations died down and the town quieted in the early hours of January 1, 2025, the mood in Soroti was one of hope and resilience.
Residents expressed optimism that the New Year would bring economic recovery, improved social services, and unity among communities.
"I pray that 2025 will be the year of transformation for Soroti and Teso as a whole. We need to work together to achieve our dreams," said Rev. Betty Ekirapa, a Pentecostal pastor.
Whether through prayer or revelry, the people of Soroti embraced the New Year with enthusiasm, determination, and gratitude, ready to face 2025 with renewed vigor.
