A thrilling 4-4 draw between UGLions Germany and Dutch Cranes Netherlands in Cologne, Germany, has highlighted the growing role of sports diplomacy in uniting the Ugandan diaspora in Europe.

The friendly football match, organized by the UGLions Football Team on June 6, attracted between 300 and 700 Ugandans and friends of Uganda from Germany, the Netherlands and other parts of the continent.

The initiative received strong backing from the Ugandan Embassy in Berlin, which provided 1,000 euros in financial support to help organize the fixture.

Jessica Namuddu, second secretary at the Berlin mission, attended the match alongside other embassy staff.

Speaking at the event, Namuddu reaffirmed  government's commitment to using athletic competition to strengthen ties with Ugandans living abroad.

"We are building a stronger, more connected Ugandan community across Europe while promoting Uganda’s image and values through sport," Namuddu said.

She pledged continued support from both the embassy and the Kampala government for diaspora initiatives that foster community engagement, cultural exchange and national unity.

According to the organizers, the Cologne match successfully created networking opportunities for the diaspora while increasing the visibility of Ugandan culture in Europe.

The fixture also served as a crucial build-up to the upcoming Euro Cranes Tournament, scheduled to take place in Amsterdam from July 3 to July 5.

The Euro Cranes Tournament is an annual celebration of football and culture hosted by a different European country each year. The 2026 edition is expected to bring together more than eight Ugandan diaspora teams for a weekend of sports, networking and cultural exchange.
