KCCA Urges Nabugabo Company to Intensify Garbage Collection in Kampala
Kampala Capital City Authority (KCCA) has called on Nabugabo Updeal Joint Venture to strengthen garbage collection efforts amid persistent waste management challenges in the city, as officials mark World Environment Day and honour the late sanitation reform advocate Alhajji Abdu Musa Ssenyondo.

Kampala Capital City Authority (Kampala Capital City Authority) has acknowledged that it still faces a significant challenge in managing garbage collection across the city and has urged Nabugabo Updeal Joint Venture to intensify its waste management operations to improve cleanliness in Kampala.

The appeal was made during World Environment Day commemorations and at an event held in honour of the late former director of Nabugabo Updeal Joint Venture, Alhajji Abdu Musa Ssenyondo, who is credited with pioneering sanitation and waste collection initiatives in the city.

Residents of Kampala have long grappled with increasing volumes of uncollected garbage in several areas, prompting KCCA to partner with private waste management firms to support collection and disposal services within the capital.

Speaking at the event, Sarah Zalwango said waste sorting remains one of the biggest challenges affecting efficient garbage management in the city.

“There is still a big task of educating residents on separating and properly managing waste. This will make the work easier for garbage collectors and improve sanitation across the city,” she said.

She urged residents to take personal responsibility in maintaining cleanliness by avoiding littering and properly disposing of waste in their communities.

As part of the World Environment Day activities and in memory of Alhajji Abdu Musa Ssenyondo, workers from Nabugabo Updeal Joint Venture carried out clean-up exercises in areas including Namungoona, where they collected and transported garbage for disposal.

Company representatives also emphasized the importance of community responsibility in maintaining a clean city, calling on residents to avoid indiscriminate dumping of waste.

“Cleanliness begins with individual responsibility. We call upon all Kampala residents to properly dispose of garbage and keep the city clean,” a company official said.

Leaders from Lubaga Division, led by Mayor Mberaze Mawula, urged KCCA to closely monitor private garbage collection companies to ensure proper coordination and prevent service gaps in different parts of the city.

Meanwhile, KCCA said discussions with various waste management companies are ongoing, aimed at improving coordination, efficiency, and coverage of garbage collection services across Kampala.
