The Government of India has pledged to facilitate the repatriation of the body of former Kenyan Prime Minister Raila Odinga, following his death earlier today.
President William Ruto made the announcement during a national address, saying the late Odinga will be accorded a state funeral in recognition of his immense contribution to Kenya’s democracy and development.
“The Government of India has assured us of full support in ensuring the smooth repatriation of the body of our departed leader. We are working closely with Indian authorities and the Odinga family to make the necessary arrangements,” President Ruto said.
Ruto paid tribute to Odinga as “a patriot, democrat, and statesman whose courage and vision shaped the trajectory of our nation,” adding that the government will designate a national mourning period in his honor.
Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi also mourned Odinga’s passing, describing him as “a towering statesman and a cherished friend of India.”
“Deeply saddened by the passing of my dear friend and former Prime Minister of Kenya, Mr. Raila Odinga. He had a special affection for India, our culture, values, and ancient wisdom,” Modi said in a message shared on his official X account.
Modi noted that he had known Odinga since his tenure as Chief Minister of Gujarat and that their friendship endured over the years.
He also recalled Odinga’s admiration for India’s traditional medicine systems, particularly Ayurveda, which he credited for positively impacting his daughter’s health.
The Indian leader extended his condolences to the Odinga family, friends, and the people of Kenya, saying India stands in solidarity with Kenya during this moment of grief.
Details of Odinga’s repatriation and funeral arrangements are expected to be announced in the coming days.
