NRM Director of Communications Emmanuel Dombo has weighed in on the debate over the quality of Uganda’s legislators, agreeing with Kira Municipality MP Ibrahim Ssemujju Nganda that the country needs more competent leaders in Parliament.
Dombo noted that poverty often influences electoral choices, with voters swayed by money rather than the capacity of candidates.
“People are usually exploited because they are poor and they vote whoever has the money. Some MPs use the population to come to Parliament to fight their own poverty,” he said.
He praised Ssemujju as one of the most articulate legislators, highlighting his diligence in preparing for debates.
“Ssemujju Nganda is one of the most articulate MPs. He puts in time to read and understand what he is debating,” Dombo observed.
Dombo also commented on recent controversies surrounding Parliamentary Commissioner Mathias Mpuuga, pointing out contradictions among legislators.
“Some MPs were saying ‘Mpuuga yalya,’ but the same MPs are the ones who passed the budget that contained the money that was given to Mpuuga,” he said.
His remarks add weight to the ongoing conversation about strengthening accountability and ensuring that Parliament is filled with leaders who are both qualified and committed to serving the people.
