Tororo District Council has officially resolved to name the newly created third district Nagongera District, following a tense and closely contested council vote held today.
In a session marked by heated debate, 30 councillors voted in favour of the name Nagongera, outnumbering the 25 who supported Kisoko.
The decision effectively settles the long-running contest over the naming of the new administrative unit and its headquarters.
The outcome means Tororo will now be divided into Mulanda District, Nagongera District, Mukuju District, and Tororo City, completing a government-backed restructuring process aimed at bringing services closer to the people.
Deputy Resident District Commissioner (RDC) of Tororo, Albert Amula, confirmed the development, noting that the Ministry of Local Government had concluded extensive consultations across the district just yesterday.
“Today the Tororo District Council passed a resolution following a vote on the name of Nagongera or Kisoko, and Nagongera took the day,” Amula told reporters.
“As a leader in Tororo, I believe these new districts will improve service delivery and ease the political and tribal tensions that have long existed in the district.”
The move follows an April 2025 decision by President Yoweri Museveni, who approved the creation of four administrative units out of the larger Tororo District.
These include three new districts—Mulanda, Nagongera, and Mukuju—alongside the elevation of Tororo Municipality into a city.
The restructuring has been welcomed by many leaders as a step toward improved governance and equitable service distribution in the region, though debates over naming and headquarters had threatened to deepen divisions within the district.
With the council’s decision now settled, attention is expected to shift toward operationalizing the new districts, setting up administrative offices, and ensuring a smooth transition before official launch.
