Busongora South Member of Parliament, Gideon Mujungu, has accused FPU officials of collaborating with rogue fishermen to deplete fish stocks by using illegal nets in restricted breeding areas.

“The officials are not only failing in their duty but are actively destroying the resource they are mandated to protect,” Mujungu alleged.

He further called on President  Museveni to review the unit’s operations on Lakes Edward, George, and the Kazinga Channel, suggesting a possible disbandment if the allegations are proven true.

Lt. Hatim Mbaziira, the overall commander of FPU operations in the region, has refuted these claims, stating that the unit remains committed to conserving aquatic ecosystems. “It is illogical to assume that we would destroy the very resources we are entrusted to protect,” he said.

Mbaziira also highlighted the presence of multiple forces operating on the lakes, some of which wear similar uniforms, potentially leading to confusion among locals.

“We are aware of these allegations and understand that some of them might stem from misunderstandings about our operations and the presence of other groups on the water. However, the FPU is steadfast in fulfilling its mandate,” Lt. Mbaziira assured.

Local leaders, however, insist that the situation on the lakes needs urgent attention.

They have called for an independent investigation into the matter to establish the truth and address the growing mistrust between the unit and the community.

Meanwhile, environmental activists have urged the government to enhance transparency in lake management operations, emphasising the need for stricter enforcement of regulations to protect Uganda’s aquatic biodiversity.

As investigations into the allegations unfold, the public awaits clarity on the role of the FPU and other forces in managing the lakes’ vital resources.
