The Patriotic League of Uganda (PLU), an opposition party, finds itself in a delicate situation following the arrest of Hon. Michael Mawanda, their Director of Mobilization, on corruption charges.
A recent press release by the PLU acknowledges Mawanda's arrest while simultaneously upholding their stance against corruption and the rule of law.
David Kabanda, the party's General Secretary, condemned corruption in all its forms but emphasized the principle of innocent until proven guilty: "We also note that Hon. Mawanda is, under the law, innocent until proven guilty by a competent Court."
This measured approach aims to appease party supporters who might be angered by the arrest. The PLU leadership urges them to "stay calm as the Law takes its course."
Interestingly, the press release also expresses gratitude to President Museveni for his fight against corruption. The PLU "continues to thank His Excellency the president of the Republic of Uganda for the resolve in stamping corruption out of Uganda." They further pledge "total commitment to His Excellency the President as far as fighting corruption is concerned."
This stance might raise eyebrows considering the PLU's opposition status. Some might interpret it as currying favor with the President, while others might see it as a genuine commitment to combating corruption regardless of political affiliation.
The PLU's response highlights the complexities of Uganda's political landscape. The party walks a tightrope, balancing its anti-corruption stance with the need to navigate a politically charged situation involving a high-ranking member.
