Arua Police officer charged with defilement set free for lack of evidence

Police of Arua city have set free a police officer who was arrested last week and charged with defilement of a one and a half year old juvenile.

Inspector of Police Thomas Otim, 49 attached to the Professional Standards Unit West Nile Region has been under custody for the case he allegedly committed on October 9, but was set free on Tuesday following advice from the Resident State Attorney that case lacked sufficient evidence.

“The current update on the case file of Aggravated Defilement which was registered against a police officer, one IP Otim Thomas attached to PSU West Nile Region, which was taken to office of Resident State Attorney Arua City for perusal and legal advice, is that the Resident State Attorney advised the case file to be closed due to insufficient evidence to support the case,” said West Nile Regional Police spokesperson Josephine Angucia

“Police acted accordingly by setting free the suspect, and closed the case file till further notice.” She added

This case of aggravated defilement was reported by Racheal Nasiima, a resident of Arua CBD Police barracks and the mother of the victim, who was also the suspect's neighbour.

It has been established that the father of the victim is a senior police doctor called Dr Madrama Charles, the Regional Police Surgeon West Nile Region, resident of Arua CBD Police barracks who also participated in the examination of the victim and the suspect.

Investigation into the allegation was instituted under Arua CBD CRB 900/2023, medical examinations done, relevant statements recorded.
