Wankulukuku-based Express FC on Tuesday suffered another huge blow in their effort to fight relegation when they were beaten by Kirinya side Jinja SS in a game played at Bugembe in the Uganda Premier League.
Two goals in either half of the game by Fred Amaku in the 11th minute and Anthony Mayanja in the 82 minute were enough to sink the visitors who are on a campaign to avoid relegation after a bad spell in the league .
At the St.Mary’s stadium, home side Vipers Sports Club scored only one minute to the end of the game to keep the candle for their race to this year’s title alight.
The Venoms opened the scoring only 12 minutes through Brian Nkuubi of a Milton Karisa pass but the lead was short-lived as Bright Stars restored parity, ten minutes later through John Kokas Opejo.
The Mwererwe based team would later take the lead through their marksman Nelson Ssenkatuuka’s 40th minute spot kick.
The search for an equalizer for the Venoms remained a dream until the 80th minute when second half substitute Steven Mukwala deflected a Geoffrey Wasswa effort into the goal to restore parity.
The Kitende based team would later keep their hopes for the title alive when Tom Matsiko scored the winning goal that brought back life to the team’s fans.
At Lugogo, defending champions KCCA FC were frustrated by visitors and new league entrants Mbarara City when they played to a one all draw.
The Lugogo based Kasasiro boys took the lead through midfielder Muzamiru Mutyaba who scored a penalty to keep their hopes alive but could not maintain the grip the lead when Maqueth Wol scored for the visitors in the 49th minute to level matters at the Star Times stadium.
The game at Kavumba between hosts Soana FC and record champions SC Villa was postponed due to the heavy downpour that made the pitch unplayable on Tuesday evening.
The Tuesday games left SC Villa still at the top of the Uganda Premier League on 43 points, one above second placed Vipers SC whereas the defending champions KCCA FC are third on 40 points from 20 games.
In the drop zone is Masavu in the 16th position with only 19 games from 22 games, the same as Proline and Express FC who are all teetering on the verge of relegation.
