Express declared UPL champions as FUFA end 2020/21 season

Local football governing body, FUFA have invoked the 75 percent rule of the Competitions Committee Rules to declare Express FC as the 2020/21 Uganda Premier League champions.

The Wankulukuku based team was top of the log with 58 points, one above second-placed Uganda Revenue Authority with four games left.

However, FUFA said the declaration of Express as champions was made inevitable by the continued uncertainty caused by the Coronavirus pandemic and the subsequent lockdown.

“The FUFA Emergency Executive Committee has taken the decision to end the 2020/21 StarTimes Uganda Premier League based on Article 18, Section 1, Sub-section C & D of the FUFA Competition rules,” FUFA said in a statement on Tuesday .

“The above article states that where the league format due to circumstances of force majeure is not played to completion the league winner shall be determined where at least one club has played more than 75% of the league games.”

FUFA also declared that whereas Express will represent Uganda in the CAF Champions League, second-placed URA FC will play in the CAF Confederation Cup.

Relegation

The local football governing body also declared bottom-placed Kyetume FC on 23 points, MYDA, 14 points and Kitara relegated from the Uganda Premier League.

The development means Express FC have won their seventh league title and their first since 2012 when they last won one.
