The Secretary General of the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM), Richard Todwong, has called for a forensic audit of the recent Kawempe North by-election.
The election, held last Thursday, resulted in NRM candidate Faridah Nambi losing to Elias Nalukoola of the National Unity Platform (NUP).
Appearing on NBS Television's Morning Breeze, Todwong asserted that the party did not lose the election fairly, suggesting that there are deeper issues that warrant investigation.
"We have lost elections before but there is something a little deeper," Todwong said.
Todwong called for an inquiry into all parties involved in the election, including both NUP and NRM, to investigate what he claims was suspected foul play.
"NUP must be investigated. NRM must be investigated. Everyone must account for their actions in this election," Todwong said.
He further highlighted the necessity of looking into the Electoral Commission and the security forces deployment during the by-election.
"We are calling for a forensic audit. Everyone must be investigated. NUP, NRM, security forces and the Electoral Commission."
In an election characterized by a heavy security deployment in Kawempe, Nalukoola emerged victorious with 17,764 votes, while Nambi received 8,593 votes.
Last week, the NRM's Central Executive Committee announced plans to contest the election results in court, citing voter intimidation among other reasons.
The election also witnessed incidents of violence against journalists, with some being arrested by security personnel.
