The ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM) is optimistic about winning the Kawempe North by-election, despite growing concerns over the conduct of security forces in the electoral process.
Dr. Tanga Odoi, Chairman of the NRM Electoral Commission, expressed confidence in the party’s chances, stating,
“NRM is going to win in Kawempe. The mistakes police are making may give the opposition an edge, but when you go to neutral observers, we are ahead.” he said.
He also warned independent candidates against using NRM symbols, cautioning that such actions could mislead voters.
The by-election, set for March 13, 2025, follows the passing of former MP Muhammad Ssegirinya. The nomination process has been marked by incidents of violence and allegations of human rights violations.
Deputy Speaker of Parliament Thomas Tayebwa strongly condemned reports of torture and intimidation, describing the security operatives responsible as “enemies of the state.”
The presence of the Joint Anti-Terrorism Taskforce (JATT) in Kawempe has further raised eyebrows, with masked and armed operatives reportedly using excessive force, particularly during the nomination of NUP candidate Elias Luyimbazi Nalukoola.
Kira Municipality MP Ibrahim Ssemujju Nganda and other stakeholders have questioned their role in the by-election.
Despite the tensions, NRM’s flag bearer, Faridah Nambi, has been actively campaigning, rallying support from women and youth. She has highlighted the NRM’s contributions to peace and development, urging party members to remain united in securing victory.
As election day nears, the NRM remains determined to clinch the seat, even as concerns persist over the security situation and overall electoral environment.
