The National Resistance Movement (NRM) Parliamentary Caucus convened at Entebbe today, resolving to support the new proposals in the comprehensive UPDF amendment bill.
The bill, set to be tabled before Parliament next week, aims to address the misconduct of active military officers and civilians who acquire firearms.
According to Government Chief Whip Denis Hamson Obua, the UPDF bill will provide a framework for trying civilians who acquire firearms in military courts.
This development follows a recent Supreme Court ruling that declared the trial of civilians in military courts unconstitutional.
The proposed amendments are a response to the Supreme Court's decision, which nullified some sections of the UPDF Act.
President Museveni summoned the NRM Parliamentary Caucus to discuss the planned amendments, which will be introduced to Parliament next week.
Key proposals in the bill include addressing the misconduct of active military officers, trying civilians who acquire firearms in military courts, and introducing guidelines on the length of service for officials serving in the Court Martial to enhance stability and consistency.
The NRM Parliamentary Caucus's endorsement of the comprehensive UPDF amendment bill marks a significant step towards addressing the implications of the Supreme Court's ruling and ensuring the operational efficiency of the UPDF.
