Over 300 medical workers are set to attend to over 2,500 patients in a highly anticipated surgical camp in Western Uganda, offering much-needed medical services to residents of the Ankore Subregion.

Dr. Diana Atwine, Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Health, has been vocal about the significance of this initiative, urging people to take advantage of the free healthcare services.

"This is a great opportunity and our services shall be free. We have assembled a team of experienced surgeons and specialists to provide critical care to those in need," Atwine stated.

The surgical camp, running from September 22nd to 28th, 2024, will offer a wide range of medical services across 13 districts, including Mbarara, Ibanda, Ntungamo, Bushenyi, and others in the Ankore region.

Dr. Atwine stressed that this camp is not just about addressing current health issues but also about preventative care.

This is not only about surgeries; the will also be offering screenings for conditions like cervical cancer, gastrointestinal issues, and TB, which are preventable if detected early.

"The camp will also provide screenings for hearing, eye defects, and other general healthcare services," Dr. Diana explained.

Dr. Atwine’s call to action highlights the importance of community participation to ensure the success of the camp.

"Our healthcare workers are ready, and we have the necessary resources. We shall support them to ensure they deliver these health services. But we need the people to come forward," she said.

The collaborative effort between the Ministry of Health, the Association of Surgeons of Uganda (ASOU), and political leaders reflects a commitment to improving healthcare in remote areas, with a particular focus on the Ankore region’s most vulnerable populations.
