Storm Ravages Katwe Kabatooro, Displaces Over 300 Residents

Over 300 residents of Katwe Kabatooro Town Council are grappling with devastation after a powerful storm swept through the area last evening, leaving 65 houses severely damaged and many families homeless.
The storm, characterized by fierce winds and heavy rain, tore off roofs, collapsed walls, and uprooted trees, plunging the lakeside town into chaos.
Among the hardest hit is Shaipuma Soki, whose home was completely unroofed. Soki recounted the harrowing experience: “The heavy wind came along with rain, blowing off the rooftop of my house. Luckily, my neighbor's house was safe, and we sought refuge on their veranda.”

Another resident, Twaha Baluku, sustained injuries while attempting to salvage belongings from his collapsing home. “The wind was too strong. It blew off the roof in seconds, and debris hit me on the arm,” Baluku said, showing his bandaged limb.
The aftermath of the storm has left many households stranded. Some families are sleeping in the open, while others have sought shelter with neighbors. Area leaders are now appealing for urgent government intervention.

Gideon Mujungu, Member of Parliament for Busongora South, expressed deep concern over the growing crisis. “This storm has left hundreds of my constituents in dire need. We urge the government to establish temporary shelters and provide relief items such as food, blankets, and other essentials,” he said. Mujungu also encouraged residents to plant trees as windbreakers to mitigate future disasters.
As Katwe Kabatooro residents face the daunting task of rebuilding their lives, humanitarian organizations and well-wishers are being called upon to assist in the recovery process.
