Police in Katwe Kabatoro, Kasese District, are investigating the death of a 28-year-old man, Kule Felex Gaddafi, who was killed by a crocodile while fishing in Lake Edward on October 30, 2024.

Gaddafi, a resident of Tophil Cell, Tophil Ward in Katwe Kabatoro Town Council, was reportedly fishing in a restricted crocodile breeding area when the tragic incident occurred.

Authorities believe Gaddafi was engaged in illegal fishing around 7 p.m. when he unknowingly entered the breeding zone. SP Nelson Tumushime, East Rwenzori Regional Police Spokesperson, stated, “The deceased was fishing illegally and seemed unaware of the risks posed by the crocodiles in that part of the lake.”

Witnesses reported that a crocodile seized Gaddafi, dragging him into the water as fellow fishermen looked on. They immediately alerted Marine Police, who promptly initiated a search. “Marine Police responded swiftly and recovered his body after a thorough search,” Tumushime confirmed.

This incident underscores the hazards of fishing in restricted areas and the risks some fishermen take to catch fish. Lake Edward is rich in wildlife, particularly crocodiles, and certain zones are off-limits especially during breeding season to protect both people and wildlife.

The tragedy has left the local community in shock, with Gaddafi’s family and friends gathering to mourn his loss. His body has since been handed over to his family for burial.

“This was an avoidable loss,” said a family member, highlighting the need for stronger enforcement and awareness of restricted zones.

Local authorities are urging residents to respect safety boundaries around Lake Edward and to avoid fishing in prohibited areas.

“These restrictions are in place for a reason,” Tumushime stressed, adding that they are concerned by the increase in illegal fishing in dangerous zones.

In light of this tragedy, authorities plan to intensify awareness efforts to prevent further incidents. “This incident serves as a stark reminder of the importance of following safety guidelines,” Tumushime noted, offering condolences to Gaddafi’s family as police continue to monitor restricted areas along the lake to prevent similar accidents.
