Security forces have apprehended two suspects and recovered three illegal firearms following recent operations in the districts of Karenga and Kaabong.

Major Isaac Oware, the Third Division Information Officer, confirmed that the operations successfully seized the weapons, which included two submachine guns and a light machine gun.

The first operation in Karenga District led to the arrest of two suspects, Peter Lomojong and John Lokoroi, both residents of Kawalakol Sub-county.

"The duo was found in possession of two submachine guns, numbered K53 with one round and NK6899 with nine rounds," stated Major Oware.

In a separate operation in Kaabong District, under the command of Lieutenant Colonel Gaston Mugarura, security forces recovered a light machine gun (PKM), numbered M8024116, along with 19 live rounds of ammunition.

However, the suspect, Lakalany Apanangula, a resident of Lodwa village in Kaabong, managed to evade capture and remains at large.

Efforts are currently underway to apprehend Apanangula and continue the crackdown on illegal firearms in the region.

These operations are part of a broader strategy to address insecurity caused by armed warriors in the Karamoja sub-region.

During the Karamoja cultural event on September 7, 2024, President Museveni urged residents to surrender illegal firearms and embrace peace, describing it as the missing "ingredient" needed to spur progress in the region.
