Residents of Kyambala Village in Kalungu's Bukulula Sub-county took the law into their own hands Tuesday night, killing and burning a suspected robber.
The unidentified victim, a male believed to be around 20 years old and wearing military boots, was killed and set ablaze along with his motorcycle registration number UGF 783M.
The incident occurred after the suspect and his accomplices allegedly targeted the homes of local residents Eddy Yiga, a hairdresser, and Patrick Wasswa, a fuel salesman.
The suspects reportedly raided these homes at night, prompting a swift and violent reaction from the community, who have been grappling with theft issues.
Perezi Ddungu, the chairperson of Kyambala village, expressed frustration over the rising crime rate in the area.
He noted the crucial role that Local Defense Unit (LDU) guards had previously played in curbing such incidents during their deployment.
Mr Ddungu lamented the increasing incidents of livestock theft, crop destruction, break-ins, and street ambushes, calling for enhanced security measures to protect residents.
Bukulula Subcounty chairperson Husein Bazadde Kaweesa and Kalungu vice chairperson Irene Nanyanzi condemned the residents' actions, emphasizing that such vigilantism undermines the rule of law.
They urged the community to channel their efforts into productive activities that would improve their livelihoods and discourage criminal behaviour.
Following the incident, the body of the deceased and the remains of the motorcycle were transported to Masaka for forensic examination.
Greater Masaka police spokesperson Twaha Kasirye confirmed that an investigation is underway to identify the deceased and locate any accomplices who may have fled the scene.
Authorities continue to warn against mob justice, reminding the public that such actions not only contravene legal protocols but also complicate the pursuit of justice for all parties involved.
