Kabale Hospital stuck with six unidentified bodies

Five bodies have been in the mortuary since last November 2023, while the sixth is of a 21-year-old Rwandan national who perished in an accident last month.

KABALE - Residents living around Kabale Regional Referral Hospital have cried out to authorities at the health facility over heavy stench from decomposing bodies in its mortuary.

A mortuary attendant told to this reporter on condition of anonymity in order speak freely that five bodies have been in the mortuary since last November 2023, while the sixth is of a 21-year-old Rwandan national, James Tuyizere, who passed away last month while while travelling by bus from Kampala to Kisoro District in southwestern Uganda.

Now, residents mostly the business community who include Jacinta Uwimaana, who operates a hotel and Elia Twasiima, said that they are living in fear of contracting diseases resulting from the stench of decomposing bodies.

The Hospital Administrator, Dr Nelson Obote, declined to comment and referred this reporter to the Kabale Municipality Town Clerk, Justine Barekye, who could not be immediately reached through her mobile cell number.

Barekye's deputy Eric Sunday also did not comment saying that he was traveling to Kampala.

But the Resident District Commissioner, Godfrey Nyakahuma, gave the hospital and municipal authorities an ultimatum to sort the mess.

“I'm not aware of the unclaimed bodies, the municipal authorities should collaborate with the hospital authorities before the end of tomorrow,” Nyakahuma said.
