Ssenyonyi calls for unity beyond politics

The Leader of Opposition in Parliament, Joel Ssenyonyi, has appealed for unity across political affiliations, stressing the importance of peaceful coexistence among Ugandans despite differing political views.
Speaking at the 75th anniversary celebration of St. Theresa Catholic Parish in Kakira, Jinja District, Ssenyonyi commended the diverse organizing committee, which included members from both the National Unity Platform (NUP) and the National Resistance Movement (NRM).

He highlighted this as a positive example of collaboration beyond party lines.
โThereโs something unique about the organizing committee. It is a team that has all manner of colors... Thatโs a good image. Thatโs what we are supposed to be like in Uganda when we are not fighting each other because of politics,โ Ssenyonyi stated.
He emphasised the need to look beyond partisan divides and respect one another as Ugandans, regardless of political, religious, or ethnic differences.
Ssenyonyi also raised concerns over the detention of young people due to their political beliefs, alleging that some have been imprisoned for over four years without evidence against them.
โThere are many young people that have been locked up in jails... simply because of their political beliefs. Some have died. Many have wounds,โ he said, urging authorities to respect human rights and end political persecution.
Reflecting on the event's diversity, Ssenyonyi praised Uganda's multicultural identity and envisioned a united nation where people from various tribes and political backgrounds coexist harmoniously.
He likened this vision to what one of the priests described as a โUnited States of any cosmopolitan place.โ
Ssenyonyi also voiced support for sugarcane growers, acknowledging the challenges they face and pledging efforts to ensure they receive fair treatment and value for their produce.
The event, attended by Bishop Dominic Eyibu of Kotido Diocese, included confirmations of young people into the Catholic faith and wedding ceremonies for couples, adding a spiritual dimension to the celebrations.
Reiterating his message of unity, Ssenyonyi urged Ugandans to treat each other with respect and work together for the good of the country.
