Recognizing the efforts of the youth on international youth day
By Bridget Nsimenta
As the world marks International Youth Day on August 12, attention turns to the remarkable contributions and efforts of young people in shaping our future.
This year's theme, "Youth digital pathways for Sustainable Development," highlights the critical role youth play in driving social, economic, and environmental progress globally.
In Uganda, the youth constitute a significant portion of the population, with 22% aged between 18 and 30 years, according to the UBOS 2024 census report.
This demographic is a powerhouse of potential, creativity, and innovation, crucial for the nation's development.
Various youth-led initiatives have made significant strides in addressing community challenges. From environmental conservation projects to tech-driven solutions for local problems, Ugandan youth are at the forefront of transformative change.
Their efforts in entrepreneurship, advocacy, and volunteerism have not only provided employment opportunities but also fostered social cohesion and resilience.
Talking to the media yesterday, Dan Isimbwa, the National Youth Leader of UPC, emphasized the importance of recognizing and supporting youth efforts.
"Investing in education, sports, mentorship, and talent development is essential for empowering our youth and fostering national progress," he noted. Isimbwa highlighted the need for more government support in these areas to ensure that young people have the resources and opportunities to thrive.
International Youth Day serves as a reminder of the vital contributions of young people and the need to create an enabling environment for their continued growth and involvement.
As celebrations take place in Soroti District, Teso subregion, and across the nation, the call for action is clear: empower the youth, recognize their efforts, and invest in their future for a sustainable and prosperous Uganda.
