PLU Ankole youth ask Museveni to retire Gen Kainerugaba from active military service

A section of youth from the Patriotic League of Uganda (PLU) in Ankole have asked President Yoweri Museveni to consider peaceful transition of power in 2026 after the general elections.

The youth led by Bruce Ainomugisha told media in Mbarara the best candidate to take on the mantle of leadership is PLU founder Gen Muhoozi Kainerugaba.

Anomugisha said they had also petitioned Museveni, thanking him for his great contributions to the country and requested him to leave power so that Muhoozi can deal with the rampant corruption.

“We would like to affirm and applaud President Museveni Tibuhaburwa for his fundamental leadership and achievements ever since he assumed the leadership of this country from 1986,” the PLU youth said.

“The NRM government under Gen. Museveni has massively invested in infrastructure development such as the road network, electricity and water supply systems. He has expanded healthcare services reducing maternal and child mortality rates while increasing life expectancy.”

According to the PLU youth, the president has improved access to education with increased enrolment rates and improved quality education in schools across the country.

“He has implemented economic reforms that led to sustainable growth and socio-economic development, with Uganda emerging as one of the fastest growing economies in the world. The country’s economy is projected to expand by 6.0% in 2024 and 7.0% in 2025.”

“In terms of security, the president has led a peaceful country since 1986, which has raised investor confidence thereby attracting hundreds of foreign firms to set up multi-billion factories which have employed thousands of Ugandans, especially the youth,” the party youth argued.

However, the youth said “whereas President Museveni has made positive contribution to Uganda’s development, there are growing concerns over his administration’s approach to corruption with impunity”.

“As young patriots, we do not believe that even President Museveni or the opposition can fight corruption because the people around the President have literally taken him hostage, turning him into a state captive where they are now untouchables,” the youth stated.

"We are in agreement with other sections of society such as the young people or Gen Z, the old generation, civil society, NRM supporters, those who do not support NRM… to call upon and appeal to our great pan Africanist Gen Museveni to seriously consider handing over power to an able and appropriately-elected leader in 2026.”

“The young generation who make majority of Ugandans believe that Gen Muhoozi Kainerugaba is the only suitable candidate to hold the mantle of the next President.”

They asked the president to allow Muhoozi retire “from active military service so that he can further engage in countrywide consultations ahead of the 2026 general elections.”
