Gabonese Transitional President, Gen Brice Oligui Nguema is expected to arrive in the country on Friday for a three-day official visit, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs has said.

According to a brief statement from the ministry, Nguema will be in the country from Thursday to Saturday.

"The Ministry of Foreign Affairs would wish to inform the General Public that the Transitional President of the Republic of Gabon will be in Uganda on official Visit from 1st-3rd August 2024," the ministry stated.

This will be his first state visit to Uganda since he assumed office as the Interim President of Gabon.

Nguema, 49, has been serving as the Interim President of Gabon, chairman of the Committee for the Transition and Restoration of Institutions of Gabon since September last year.

He took power following the 2023 Gabonese coup d'état which overthrew President Ali Bongo, who had ruled the country from 2009 to 2023.

Following the coup, he was declared the interim president of Gabon in an announcement broadcast on state television.

At his swearing-in ceremony in the country's capital, Libreville, Nguema, said the coup had been peaceful and vowed to return power to the people by organising free, transparent and credible elections.

“With the new government, made up of experienced people, we’re going to give everyone a chance to hope,” he was quoted as saying.
