Health minister Jane Ruth Aceng says there is no immediate cause for alarm, but urges the public to remain vigilant to prevent further spread.

As of September 6, 2024, Uganda has confirmed 10 cases of Mpox across various regions, with three cases each in Kasese and Mayuge, and two cases in Kampala.

Health minister Jane Ruth Aceng said there is no immediate cause for alarm, but urges the public to remain vigilant to prevent further spread.

On August 14, 2024, the World Health Organization (WHO) declared Mpox an emergency of International Concern, highlighting its growing impact on global health.

The endemic has reached 121 WHO member states, with 15 in Africa, where the disease has contributed to 222 deaths worldwide, 55% of which are from the continent.

Dr. Aceng reassured the public, stating, "There is no need for worry but we must remain vigilant to curb the spread of the endemic."

She emphasized that Uganda's health infrastructure is well-prepared to manage the situation, noting that the ministry has secured 2,000 doses of vaccines to be administered on 10000 people , and has intensified surveillance efforts.

"With two National Isolation facilities in Entebbe and Mulago, the endemic is manageable and there is no need for lockdowns," she added.

Dr. Henry Kyobe, Team Lead for Mpox Management at the Ministry of Health, highlighted the high-risk zones, particularly noting Kasese and over 20 districts bordering the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).

He warned, "Truck drivers and sex workers should be cautious as they are at increased risk of contracting the disease."

The ministry has advised that Mpox can spread through various channels, including human-to-human contact, contact with contaminated materials, mother-to-child transmission, and through affected animals.

The current health measures are aimed at mitigating the risks and controlling the spread of the disease.

In light of these developments, Ugandans are encouraged to follow health guidelines and stay informed about Mpox prevention strategies to ensure both individual and community health.

The government remains committed to managing the situation and safeguarding public health across the nation.
