Museveni orders for accountability for Shs 37bn coffee funds

By Ramson Muhairwe

President Museveni has demanded for accountability for 37 billion Shillings disbursed to Coffee Investment Consortium Uganda (CICU) for coffee value chain investment.

The consortium under the stewardship of Nelson Tugume received the said funds from president Museveni on behalf of other coffee stakeholders under the supervision of the minister for science and technology, Rr. Monica Musenero

In the wake of the president’s demand for accountability, the Minister for Science and Technology has now asked the the consortium to provide a progress report on milestones achieved.

Additionally, the minister is demanding a thorough examination of CICU’s financial records to account for how the funds were utilized in the coffee value chain.

In a letter dated, 15th January 16, 2024 and directed CICU, Dr Musenero says “the president has requested for an update” on how they (ministry of science and technology and CICU) have gone” after the funds were received

In the same letter, Musenero says the ministry has embarked on “the process of putting together the technical financial report” for the said funds

Nelson Tugume, the key figure overseeing the coffee investment, has recently come under scrutiny for alleged failure to provide a satisfactory account of the disbursed funds.

The development has raised eyebrows among coffee dealers who claim they have yet to witness the promised benefits from the substantial financial injection. Stakeholders hope the minister’s report will provide clarity on the utilization and impact of the funds within the coffee industry.
