The Uganda Women’s Movement and various Civil Society Organizations have issued a joint statement demanding the immediate release of opposition leader Dr. Kizza Besigye and other political prisoners following a recent Supreme Court ruling.
The groups expressed deep concern over what they describe as a continued crackdown on civic space, increased kidnappings using military drones, and growing authoritarian tendencies in Uganda.
They view the Supreme Court ruling as a critical opportunity to reverse these troubling developments and reinforce the protection of human rights.
Dr. Besigye, a four-time presidential candidate and vocal government critic, remains in detention despite a Supreme Court decision that should have led to his release.
His legal team has made frantic efforts to secure his freedom, but the authorities have reportedly ignored the court orders.
“The deteriorating health condition of any prisoner is a ground for immediate release from prison by courts of law,” the statement reads. “In Dr. Kizza Besigye’s case, given that he is in illegal detention, he should immediately be set free to seek quality medical care.”
The organizations expressed alarm over Besigye’s worsening health while under arbitrary detention. They called on the government to comply with the rule of law and respect judicial decisions, warning that continued disregard for court rulings threatens Uganda’s democracy and human rights record.
The joint statement is part of a growing chorus of voices advocating for Besigye’s freedom, with activists rallying together to amplify the call for justice.
