The Minister for ICT and National Guidance, Dr. Chris Baryomunsi, has provided an update on the health condition of veteran opposition leader Dr. Kizza Besigye, saying that while he is weak, there is no cause for extreme concern.
“When I visited Dr. Kizza Besigye, yes, he is weak, but from a medical standpoint, he is not in that condition where you would be extremely worried,” Baryomunsi said.
His remarks come amid growing concerns over Besigye’s health following his reported detention earlier this year.
Calls for his release and medical attention have intensified, with religious leaders, including Archbishop Stephen Kaziimba Mugalu, advocating for forgiveness and dialogue.
During the recent Janani Luwum commemoration in Kitgum District, Archbishop Kaziimba prayed for Besigye’s recovery, urging leaders to consider the health conditions of political detainees. His sentiments were echoed by Chief Justice Alfonse Owiny-Dollo and Catholic Archbishop Emeritus of Gulu, John Baptist Odama, who emphasized reconciliation and national unity.
Baryomunsi’s statement seeks to reassure the public amid the ongoing debate on Besigye’s well-being and the broader discourse on political prisoners in Uganda.
