State Minister for Sports, Peter Ogwang, has called for a speedy trial of suspects implicated in the mob killing of Uganda Rugby Cranes player Sydney Gongodyo, following the arrest of a key suspect, Obed Mugwiisa.

Mugwiisa, a boda boda rider, was arrested by police and joint intelligence teams over his alleged involvement in the fatal assault on Gongodyo, who was attacked by a mob at Forbal Stage in Bukoto on June 5, 2026.

Videos and images that circulated on social media after the incident appeared to show Mugwiisa and several other individuals assaulting the rugby player. Gongodyo later succumbed to injuries sustained during the attack.

Commenting on the arrest through his X account, Ogwang welcomed the progress made by security agencies and urged authorities to ensure that all suspects face justice.

The minister cited the landmark prosecution of a suspect involved in the murder of children at a daycare centre in Ggaba, saying a similar approach should be adopted in the Gongodyo case.

"Now, we demand a speedy trial of the suspects, similar to the public mobile court hearing that tried the murderer of the daycare toddlers in Ggaba. This should be another landmark case in the fight against mob justice," Ogwang posted.

Meanwhile, police have confirmed the arrest of two additional suspects in connection with Gongodyo's death, bringing the total number of people in custody to ten.

According to police, investigations into the alleged mob killing are ongoing, with efforts underway to identify and apprehend more individuals believed to have participated in the attack.

Law enforcement authorities have reaffirmed their commitment to ensuring that all those responsible are brought to justice.

"We remain committed to ensuring that all those responsible for this criminal act are held accountable and brought to justice in accordance with the law," police said in a statement.

The killing of Gongodyo, a respected rugby player who featured for the Stanbic Black Pirates and represented Uganda internationally, has sparked widespread condemnation and renewed calls for stronger action against mob justice across the country.

Police have urged members of the public to refrain from taking the law into their own hands and instead report suspected criminal activity to security agencies for proper investigation and legal action.
