The leader of National Unity Platform (NUP) Robert Kyagulanyi, alias Bobi Wine, has criticised the National Resistance Movement (NRM), noting that his party is setting an example of true democracy despite facing political suppression.

Speaking after the official announcement of NUP’s flag bearer for the Kawempe North by-election, Kyagulanyi said the transparent selection process demonstrated what democracy should look like something he claimed is absent in the ruling party.

"The process we have gone through to select our flag bearer is a true sign of democracy, something the ruling party has failed to practice," he stated.

He reaffirmed NUP’s commitment to democratic values, even in the face of adversity.

"Even when we are under duress, even when we are not allowed to do what we believe can define the leadership of a new Uganda, we continue to practice democracy," he said.

Kyagulanyi called on party members to rally behind the newly endorsed candidate and uphold NUP’s principles of integrity, unity, and discipline.

"Integrity is one of our core values, and we hold it in high regard. We don’t just want to talk about it; we want to practice it," he noted.

He commended the NUP election management committee for conducting a fair selection process.

He also urged party members to accept the outcome of the internal election and work together for victory.

"Everybody had a candidate they supported, but we all agreed that the best person has to take it. Let us all stand behind the winner," he urged.

As NUP prepares for the Kawempe North by-election, Kyagulanyi set a high target for victory.

"In Kyadondo East, we won with 80%. In Kawempe, we want 90%. But for us to achieve that, everyone has a role to play from the contenders to the leadership," he emphasised.

NUP officially endorsed city lawyer Elias Luyimbazi Nalukoola as its flag bearer for the Kawempe North by-election after a competitive race involving 10 aspirants.

Nalukoola emerged victorious against stiff competition, including Muhammad Lussa Luwemba, a former aide and confidant of the late Muhammad Ssegirinya.

Luwemba reportedly went as far as changing his name and religion and seeking divine intervention in his bid for the ticket.

The Kawempe North seat fell vacant following the death of Ssegirinya on January 9.

He had won the constituency for NUP in the 2021 general election, making it a stronghold for the opposition party.

The by-election is scheduled for March 13, with NUP widely expected to retain the seat.

To prevent post-primary divisions, the party required all 10 aspirants to sign a written agreement pledging not to run as independents if they lost the primary contest.
