The African Union Commission (AUC) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the African Forum for Muslim Councils (AFMC), establishing a partnership aimed at promoting democracy, human rights, and socio-economic development across the continent.

The formal signing took place last weekend at the AU Commission Secretariat in Addis Ababa.

The AFMC, which unites national Muslim councils from 36 African countries, was represented by Dr. Ebraheem Ssali, the Executive Secretary, on behalf of its Chairman, Dr. Sheikh Shaban Ramadhan Mubaje, the Mufti of Uganda.

The AU Commission was represented by Ms. Salma Tanany, Acting Director of the Citizens & Diaspora Directorate.

The ceremony was also attended by key officials, including Counsel Norman Mbabazi, Head of the Legal Department at AFMC.

The agreement outlines several areas of collaboration, emphasizing community development, democratic promotion, and fostering non-violent religious traditions. Key points include promoting democracy and human rights, especially for children and women, and addressing radicalism by encouraging tolerance and critical engagement.

Additionally, the partnership aims to support economic development initiatives, eradicate extreme poverty, and harmonize the role of Islamic organizations in advancing justice and democratic values across the continent.

The MOU represents a significant step in strengthening cooperation between the African Union and Islamic organisations, emphasizing the role of religious leaders in advancing peace, tolerance, and development in Africa
