Sierra Leone's security forces detained "most of the leaders" who attacked a military arsenal in the country's capital Freetown on Sunday, an investigation is underway, Sierra Leone's President Julius Maada Bio said on national television on Sunday.
"Most of the leaders have been arrested. Security operations and investigations are ongoing" the president was quoted as saying.
On November 26, the country's authorities imposed a nationwide curfew due to an attempt by unidentified assailants to enter an armory at a military unit in the suburbs of Freetown. Citizens were advised not to leave their homes. The country's civil aviation authority has asked airlines to alter flight schedules because of the curfew.
After the armory attack, several prisons, including the country's central Pademba Road Prisons, were overrun, according to the government.
Since then, the curfew has been limited to the nighttime hours of 9:00 p.m. to 6:00 a.m. local time every day "until further notice."
The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) and the European Union condemned the actions of the attackers in Sierra Leone, describing them as an attempt to violate the constitutional order.
