Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) presidential candidate Nathan Nandala Mafabi has pledged to transform Karamoja’s economy by ensuring that its natural wealth directly benefits local communities, saying the sub-region’s vast mineral and agricultural potential remains largely untapped.
Addressing campaign rallies in Napak District, Mafabi said Karamoja’s abundant mineral deposits and fertile land have for years been exploited by outsiders while residents continue to live in poverty.
“Karamoja is rich in minerals and agricultural potential, yet the people are not benefiting from their own land,” he said.
The FDC candidate said his administration would prioritize commercial farming, cash crop production, and local industry development to create jobs and reduce dependence on handouts.
“We need to make sure that the wealth beneath this soil benefits those who live on it,” he added.
Mafabi also emphasized addressing the issue of street children through structured employment and rehabilitation programs.
“These children should be given jobs and opportunities, not left to beg on the streets. That’s how we achieve real social transformation,” he said.
Highlighting his previous work with displaced Karimojong communities in Namatala, Mbale City, Mafabi said his campaign was grounded in practical experience and a track record of community support.
“Development in Karamoja cannot wait. We need policies that prioritize the people, harness local resources, and provide jobs for the youth,” he stated.
He urged government agencies and investors to adopt sustainable economic approaches that respect community rights while promoting inclusive growth.
According to Mafabi, targeted investment in agriculture, mineral processing, and small-scale industries could drastically reduce poverty and strengthen regional self-reliance.
