This clarification follows the commission’s decision to adjust the timeline for updating the national voters' register ahead of the 2026 general elections.
Initially scheduled to run from January 3 to January 24, 2025, the exercise has been rescheduled to begin on January 20 and conclude on February 10, 2025.
Addressing concerns, Mucunguzi stated, “Extending the registration exercise will not affect our budgetary provisions. We have sufficient funds and all the necessary resources to ensure a smooth and effective process.”
The EC's decision to postpone the registration dates had sparked speculation about potential financial constraints.
Sources also noted opposition from some Members of Parliament, who argued for an extension to align the registration period with the nomination timeline.
However, the commission maintains that the adjustment was a strategic decision aimed at improving logistical and operational efficiency.
“The extension allows political parties and stakeholders additional time to plan and prepare for the exercise,” Mucunguzi explained in an interview with Nile Post.
“This adjustment will not disrupt the overall electoral process or the schedules of those involved.”
Mucunguzi emphasized that the EC remains committed to carrying out the voter registration exercise without interruptions.
He reassured the public that all resources, including finances and logistical support, are in place to facilitate the process effectively.
“Extending this registration exercise has no negative impact on the budget,” Mucunguzi reiterated.
“We aim to ensure the exercise is seamless, organized, and accessible to all eligible voters.”
With these reassurances, the commission has sought to dispel doubts and reaffirm its readiness to deliver a successful registration exercise.
The public is encouraged to prepare for the upcoming exercise, confident in the commission’s ability to execute it effectively.
